Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails are a very common problem of all ages. Causes can include improper cutting, hereditary shape of the nail, trauma, toenail fungus, and tight shoes. Ingrown nails can cause pain, redness and swelling. If the skin is broken bacteria can cause an infection. Initial treatment can include soaking, antibiotic ointment and band-aids. If pain continues or infection develops then seek help from a podiatrist.

Our Services

Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is very common and the chance of affecting you increases as you age. Injuries to the nail can often be the initiating factor. The fungus can often discolor the nail (usually yellow) and over time can thicken and loosen the nail. Home therapies rarely help. Our podiatrists can examine your nails and give treatment options. These include simply trimming / thinning the nails, topical antifungals, oral antifungals or removal of affected nails.

Our Services

Corns & Calluses

These are very common problems and increase in prevalence as we get older. These result from areas of pressure or friction on our skin that causes the skin to thicken. They are common in the balls of our feet and on our toes. Deformities that rub on our shoes and lack of padding in the balls of our feet (happens as we age) are some of the main causes. These can become painful. Treatment involves trimming a corn or callus, padding, change in shoes, liners or inserts in shoes. Some deformities can be surgically treated which can help.

Our Services

Bunions

A bunion is a complex deformity involving the big toe and the bone behind the toe (1st metatarsal). This results in a bump on the inside of the foot and the big toe turning towards the 2nd toe. Bunions can cause pain in shoes and with walking. Bunions result from the mechanics of your feet, which is usually inherited. Initial treatment usually involves wearing appropriate shoes, padding and inserts. If this does not help, surgery is considered. The type of surgery and recovery varies, so evaluation and discussion with one of our podiatrists can help answer those questions.

Our Services

Hammertoes

Hammertoes are a deformity where one or both joints of the toe are not lined up straight and the toes bend. There are mechanical reasons for this, and it can be heredity. This problem becomes more prevalent as we age. The toes can rub on shoes and cause pain. Treatment is initially geared around appropriate shoes. Our podiatrists can help you with what type of shoe would help. Padding and cushions can sometimes help. If pain continues, surgically straightening the toes is an option. Our podiatrists can examine and discuss these options with you.

Our Services

Plantar Fasciitis

This common condition results in pain in the bottom of the heel. It results from strain on the plantar fascia (a thick ligament from the heel to the ball of the foot, helps support the foot). This results in inflammation or even minor tears of the plantar fascia. The strain is mainly the result of poor mechanics of a person’s foot, but poor shoewear, types of activities and sudden change in activities contribute. Pain is usually worse in the morning or after being on your feet a lot. Treatment is concentrated on improving foot function with good shoes, inserts or orthotics as well as stretching, icing and medications or injections.

Our Services

Diabetic Foot Care

Having diabetes can place you at higher risk for foot and ankle complications. The areas that can be affected include the circulation, nervous system, immune system, skin and so on. Small problems can become big problems in diabetics. Especially wounds and infections. Examining your feet daily, wearing proper shoes, avoiding barefoot and seeing a podiatrist regularly can avoid or treat problems early. Also, treating your diabetes is so important to avoiding complications.

Our Services

Athlete's Foot

This is caused by a fungus. It most often occurs between the toes but can occur anywhere on the feet, but more on the bottom. The fungus likes a warm, moist environment, thus is why it affects the feet. It can cause redness, flaking skin and sometimes cracks that can hurt. Patients can try over-the-counter products initially. Also spraying shoes with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal products can help. If not improving, see one of our podiatrists for treatment options.

Our Services

Warts

Warts are usually a round lesion often looking like a callus. Theycan have dark spots in them. They are caused by a virus which can enter the skin via tiny cuts or open areas. Over time it can thicken and then can cause pain. They can also spread. There are some over-the-counter treatments that sometimes help. If not, then see one of our podiatrists for evaluation and treatment options.

Our Services

Gout

Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in a joint. Some people develop increased levels of uric acid in their blood, either from hereditary reasons, kidney problems or diet. The big toe joint is the most common joint affected. Gout can come on quickly and causes considerable redness, swelling and pain. If you have repeated attacks this can lead to arthritis. If you develop a gout attack, you should be seen by one of our podiatrists.
